Speaking in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Theron seems understanding but simultaneously disappointed at the decision. The Mad Max prequel will detail much of Furiosa’s backstory, which means heading into the past. While George Miller initially looked into the idea of using de-aging technology to keep using the same actress, the results weren’t up to par and the idea was ultimately shot down.

When asked directly about the recasting, Theron replied, “Yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character, and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly. Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if he [George Miller] feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner.”
While Theron won’t be reprising her role in the prequel, there’s no telling if she may return for a sequel at some point in the future. The Mad Max universe hasn’t ended, after all, and the writers behind Fury Road acknowledged that they had enough material upon its completion to create at least two more films, with one being the Furiosa prequel.
Of course, even if Theron does return to the role at some point in the future, it certainly isn’t the first time that a major character in the series has been recast. The titular Mad Max himself was originally played by Mel Gibson for the series’ first three films, with Tom Hardy taking over the role in Fury Road.
